Lyrics

We’d jingle up the horses in the morning
And then we’d ride those horses all day long
We’d take a break for breakfast
For supper and for lunch
But we never had the time to write a song

Old Joe, well you know, he was a tyrant
He’d make you work your fingers to the bone
And though he liked your horses best if they were quieter than the rest
If you didn’t hurry up, he’d send you home

My life’s work now for peasant’s wages
I rode ten horses for the price of three
I ate more dirt in those six weeks than I had in the past three years
But nary a horse did get the best of me

(Banjo Solo: verse)

Old Joe could do no wrong, it wasn’t his fault
When he didn’t close the gate behind himself
And when the geldings took to running,
To the stud fence they were gunning
He was quick to lay the blame on everyone else

“You know there’s a time to run and a time to stand still
And that wasn’t a time to stand still,”
But it seems to me I took the lead and turned those horses back at speed
While Joe was standing back in the corral

My life’s work now for peasant’s wages
I rode ten horses for the price of three
I ate more dirt in those six weeks than I had in the past three years
But nary a horse did get the best of me

Joe, well you know, he was a tyrant
He’d make you work your fingers to the bone
And though he liked your horses best if they were quieter than the rest
If you didn’t hurry up, he’d send you home

Oh he liked my horses best
‘Cause they were quieter than the rest
I told him what I thought
And he sent me home
